Dana Terrace is a student in my Tuesday Foundation Drawing Class for Animation Majors. I decided to shoot a new Drawing Tip of the Week showcasing Dana’s talent. I’m very privileged to be able to look into each students sketchbook every week to check on their homework. There is so much talent that I decided to share the talent with you. Each week I will do my best to showcase a new students sketchbook. As a part of my class, students must finish two sketchbooks a semester. It’s amazing what that does to their skill level. It shoots it up big time.

I guess that to receive the loans from creditors you must have a firm reason. However, one time I have received a credit loan, just because I wanted to buy a car.

I just don’t understand why these guys get married. No one would care what they do if they didn’t. Think Wilt Chamberlain.

What I got out of this is that you don’t have to feel that every page of a sketchbook has to be complete, perfect or a drawing all to itself. Dana’s sketchbook showed a multitude of subjects on different parts of one page and she even had written something on one page along with several sketches.
I think when we stare ata blank page sometimes the urge to mark it up or mess it up looms ahead. If you do something like this where you just dive headfirst into it and fill up every inch,it breaks mental boundaries. I’m definitely going to bust some boundaries!

Am I crazy? As admirable as they may be, I don’t care about looking at students’ sketchbooks – those can be seen all over the internet! I LOVED and much preferred the Drawing Tips of the Week. learned a lot!

I feel inadequate and inspired all at once.
I LOVE IT!!!

One more thing…by combining “very personal and powerful” illustrations with a degree of “stylization that definitely leans “cute”” is not “disjunction.”
It’s called “contrast.”
October 13th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
I completely disagree with the comments telling you how to approach your art. You have your influences but you have made it all your own. Some of these people are telling you to forget Disney and blaze your own trail…PLEASE! If anything you are completely raping Disney’s corpse with your drawings and more power to you.
Robert Crumb did something similar with his comics but chose to attack the sterile comic strip styles of the 30′s and 40′s. And he did alright for himself. He actually purchased a house in a French Villa for a briefcase filled with his sketchbooks.
What these people are telling you is what THEY would do if they had your talent. Well, they don’t. Follow your own voice.

Brilliant. Thanks for the reminder to diversify. It’s always easy to slip into patterns and forget to challenge yourself. Great stuff, Dana!

absolutely tremendous…

Dana, you have a great skill. your sketches are inspirable.
October 8th, 2009 at 2:42 am
Dana… you are definitively a pro! I agree with most comments, especially the one about breaking the mold (the “forget about Disney”?) you can blaze your own path. You are being so individualistic, yet pay homage to influences. I think you can make it in any environment by the mix of subjects and your style. One of the best sketchbooks I have ever seen! Congratulations! would not be surprised to see you in print or video soon! And yes… Matt has been an influence… I could fish out that super useful “peanut shape”… which is one of the best organically oriented drawing construction ideas I know so far.
Awesomeness.

Hi Matt, Thanks very much for sharing this with us. Dana should be so very proud of her sketchbook – it’s terrific! It was really enjoyable going through the pages, thanks again!
October 7th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
I’m impressed with the confidence you exhibit in your work! You invested yourself over many years and it has clearly paid off. Congrats on your success.
October 7th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Dana has an admirable work ethic and a mind that roams the world unchecked. Congrats for that. My major critical response has to do with a disjunction between the way she eroticises certain drawings in a very personal and powerful way, observes space and life as it flows past and yet has a very institutional line and degree of stylization that definitely leans “cute”. With such a great mind and eye, I think it’s time to escape anime style and forge a personal mark set that carries the same emotional valence as the content. I have a hunch that in an animation class, a certain predictability and slickness is demanded as a sort of industry standard. But this standard needs a good swift kick in the ass. Imagine a Matisse video. Or Soutine. Or Schiele, Isvan Banyai or Paula Rego.
Dana—you are wondrously talented. Forget that Walt Disney was ever born and re-invent animation for the thinking consumer!

I agree with Helio, Dana has a pretty smile, a nice facial profile as well;) Love the sketchbook, you’re very creative…I’d love to pick your brain as to how you came up with all that stuff. Like John said, some of it was very polished, final draft stuff. Hope to see more sometime. Cheers.

Fantastic Art,
You’ll be working for Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks in no time, if they haven’t asked you already

Wow! She has some very cool and imaginative sketches. Some of her work seems much more polished than just sketches. I liked the Shark-girl the best. :0)
