There is a big argument over which is better, life drawing or drawing from photos. I think it’s important to be able to draw from both. Don’t give yourself too many rules. It’s pretty impossible to always have a model pose for you, that’s where utilizing photography is super important. To learn more visit http://www.drawing-tutorials-online.com

There’s nothing that says your model has to always be completely nude. I find it a challenge to bring out an interesting body form that lays beyond. There’s nothing that says your model has to always be completely nude.

As a practicing artist myself I often look at the fashion magazines for poses and positions to draw as I feel it inspires more figure drawing learning, but I never underestimate the power of seeing figures with my own eyes, it’s all about striking a happy balance of finding what works best for you, photos maybe more accessible for people who don’t get out much!
Great video by the way!

Come to think of it, live models are everywhere, especially if you have spouses, partners and willing friends. You just have to be a bit creative. There’s nothing that says your model has to always be completely nude. I find it a challenge to bring out an interesting body form that lays beyond the clothing and have the clothing reflect the individual. And those you can find everywhere.

Thanks Again Matt for the clarification…I am glad to know illustrators work with photos…That is my long term goal…to get work.
February 6th, 2010 at 1:05 am
What should you do when you dont have access to live model then?
I draw alot from pictures.
February 5th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
Hi from Saskatchewan, I agree with you Matt. It’s wonderful to be able to have models to draw from. It’s more physically involving than drawing from pictures to be sure. More like a dance. But pictures can give you more time to study, look, question and reinvent. I like to find pictures and draw the image in many ways. It’s interesting to see them evolve. It’s all grist for the mill.

Thanks Matt… how about getting clients? someday you should talk to us about getting clients and pricing the work…
One other question, you still start from the peanut body or you start from laying the head?
Thanks and keep up this great work.
