Saori is a student enrolled in my Tuesday drawing class at the School of Visual Arts. She has immense talent. That talent is expanding on a weekly basis. Saori was gracious enough to share her sketchbook with the world. I hope you enjoy looking at her drawings as much as I do.
Look for more sketchbook videos to arrive within a week or two as more students have volunteered to share their work. You can view our library of past weekly drawing tips by visiting our Free Drawing Tip of the Week department.
Don’t forget leave us a comment on whether or not you like watching a spur of the moment sketchbook video that is totally informal, or perhaps a slideshow of sketchbook pages photographed with a voiceover.
Thanks for watching.

matt, i really like the impromptu videos best. the still with the voice over feels stagnant, & slow moving. i didn’t think your camera shake was bad at all. the video also shows a sense of humor of life, with the coffee stains. i like the element of seeing the student, & hearing their impressions of their work. now about sari’s sketchbook. she is a remarkable artist! exquisite with dimension, texture, & line. her sketches are better than many finished works i’ve seen in galleries & museums. the fashion lover in me adores all her fashion stuff! she even made architecture, which normally bores me, interesting. i’m referring to the view from her window. also having just visited nyc in sept, that’s exactly the kind of buildings i saw.

Home based data entry work is one of the fastest growing businesses in the world. It is becoming a passion to work from home and make money online. Thousands of companies in the US and European countries had already started outsourcing their data entry positions, thus saving millions of dollars associated with employees.

Saori is very gifted, especially at such a young age. I hope she continues to have teachers like you so she can grow and advance with her skills and creativity. She can go so far as an artist! The sketchook videos are so fun to watch, I like the videos better than the still shots because there is so much more life with the movement (the shakiness is never bad) with you talking and narrating and the students at SVA in the background, all those variables make it more interesting to watch. Please leave the video parts in!
October 29th, 2011 at 3:44 am
Hi Matt. That is beautiful work. A very talented young woman.
As far as video vs. pics, i liked having both. Its nice to meet the artist and be able to study their pics. I really didnt find your video distracting.
Thank your artists for sharing, their talents inspire me.

I love her work. You could just slap frames on any of those pages Saori. They are better than a lot of finished drawings I and others have done that’s for sure. Matt,I also really like the still photos as I often wish I could spend more time looking at the pictures and could see more of the ones that get flipped past! So thanks. Also a suggestion is I would like to know more about the media they use like markers, inks, brushes, pens, etc…I’m always wondering about that

Liked Boy George the best, then the rendered dresses. Could do without the dog faces on fashion drawings.

I love Saori’s sketches and could have studied them all night. Her figure studies are so amazing and especially the wonderful gestures both in traditional and cartoon styles. So expressive! I liked the combination of stills and video – didn’t think it was too shaky, but enjoyed both methods. I liked that there were so many more of her drawings in the video. great work Saori. I’m retired and just getting back to my art and am so inspired by your energy. Thank you both for sharing this!

Hi Matt,
Just to add from the previous comments, please don’t change the sketchbook videos. It feels such more alive, just like the sketchbooks. Flipping pages, waiting to discover what’s hidden behind, it is priceless compared to the flatness of a common slideshow. Don’t worry with the shaking.
And please let me thank you again for all your work, I have not so much time to enjoy the passion of drawing and students sketchbook videos are always one of my favorite moments.
PS: sorry for the approximative writing, I’m just a french fan, dying to progress in drawing, still motivated thanks to artists like you and all of your students.

Fantastic work Saori. You are so talented. I love watching your sketchbook, it is so inspiring.
Matthew, please don’t change the videos. I love the videos. The shaking was not that bad. Maybe your arm just was a bit exhausted that day?

O M G Thank you so much for your feedback. I totally appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Looks like I will be doing the combo platter live and stills.

I really enjoyed going through Saori sketchbook WOW! What a talent.
She is so lucky to be in your classes, I want to take your dvd course
but I want to go into illustrating childrens picture books and I
don’t know if it covered in the illustration course or advertisement.
I enjoy all the sketchbooks and your discription of them. Keep them
coming. Respectfully,
Gabi

Talk about “shakey”. I’m a 77 year old and I love sketching. All of your sketchbooks have been such an inspiration to me. I like the combination of stills and video. Saori really has the human (and comic style) nailed. I kind of like her smaller heads. Shows she is developing her own style,
October 21st, 2011 at 8:04 am
Love her work really a lot of talent. Thanks for the stills I really like it this way. Keep up the great work.

Youtube has an option to de-shake your video. I use often. It should work fine to smooth out your iphone video. no problem.
Great sketches also. Do these students learn animation as well, with so many good ideas in animated sketches.

Hi Matt,
I prefer seeing sketchbook vids this way, however it would be cool to see the artist as well. This sketchbook is awesome!
October 20th, 2011 at 7:26 pm
I like the still voice over… but hey, how about talking about the drawings, as everyone is shaky sometimes and there’s no need for appologizing!! Matt, it’s OK!!! hahaha!
The video stopped half way through but that must be my computer eh?? Its all good! Saori great work!
October 20th, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Saori’s sketchbook is wonderful! I vote for the video Matt. I like the crisp-ness of the stills but the “feeeeeling” of the video comments really brings you into the sketchbook review. I think that’s why I enjoy them so much (other than the work itself). The pans of the classroom are great too so the viewer can relate to where you are.
Hope this helps a little!

Very nice! Matt, I like both methods, the stills w/voice over and the video Saori, great idea to use the dress designer’s book for inspiration.
October 20th, 2011 at 3:57 pm
Fantastic sketchbook, Saori….
Matt you asked about preference for viewing…. the stills, with talk over, would be my first choice. The viddie wasn’t too shakey and like Greg mentioned, there is something to be said with the panning move, to take in the class and above mentioned artist.
(the coffee stains on your shirt… were you multi tasking…video, page turning and drinking coffee?):)
Again, great sketchbook thank you.
Cheers, Barry
October 20th, 2011 at 3:02 pm
The pictures were amazing~
If Saori has a deviantART account can you ask her-and post her deviantART username so I can watch her?
If she is okay with that, that is.
October 20th, 2011 at 1:22 pm
Thank you very very much to share my sketchbook!
Here’s one thing I have to say…
Those gorgeous dress designs are not my ideas.
I just copied a design book of great dress designers to learn
beautiful silhouettes.
Anyway, thank you for watching!

Matt, I love the informal videos you shoot with your iPhone. I look foward to seeing your intro and then panning all around and sometimes showing the artist of the sketchbook. As you would put it “it’s crazy” and that’s the way I like it. The formal way with the voice over just didnt do for me…sorry. I like the flipping of pages where drawings are not quit there yet or unfinished. Nevertheless, all these kids have great talent and I love sketchbooks!

Thanks for the comments, Sarah I think you hit the nail on the head. Just do both all of the time.
Thanks!!!!!!

I love these sketchbook videos. (I used to flip through my mother’s old sketchbooks to get some inspiration whenever I got stuck)And these sketchbooks really ispire me work harder and get better.
I think the way you did it now was the best way to do it. With the pictures and voice-over you get to see the drawings a little better, but what I also like about the old videos was that the artist was right there next to you and he or she would answer some of the questions that popped up. So I think this version is the best of both worlds. But that’s just my opinion.
Anyway, thanks for uploading the video.
Sarah
(p.s. the shaking wasn’t that bad)
October 20th, 2011 at 6:28 am
Sorry, I didn’t mean to put that link in the comments. I think that even with the shakiness that I still think the video is helpful. I get the ideas and the flow of information is effective. Good Job
